Valley Contemporary Poets presents an open mic reading with featured poet Bonnie Kaplan at The Cobalt Café, 22047 Sherman Way, west of Topanga Canyon Blvd., Canoga Park.

This is event is part of the weekly reading series held every Tuesday night at The Cobalt Café in Canoga Park. Hosted since 1994 by Los Angeles poet Rick Lupert, author of a new book of poetry called We Put Things in Our Mouth, this weekly event represents the best of the literary spirit in our community, and the LA Books Examiner hopes you will support this event and keep it going every Tuesday night. The best part: other than the featured poet, you never know who might show up and share her work. Last Tuesday, in fact, the LA Books Examiner was there and read from his new book of poetry The BruburyTales.

Bonnie Kaplan captures moments in a jar and releases them through stories, performances and prose poetry. She grew up in the San Fernando Valley and began doing performance art at the California State University Northridge where she earned her BA in 1985. She went on to receive an MFA in Performance/Video from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1991 and a California Arts Council Grant in 1996. Since moving back to the San Fernando Valley in 2000 her work has been published in the anthology Mentsh (2004) and she has given readings at Santa Monica Playhouse, Tasty Words, Melt In Your Mouth, Spark Off Rose, and Theater/Theatre. For the past decade she has worked as a teacher in the California Corrections system, helping prepare parolees to re-enter the community.
