Boyd Morrison, author of the debut thriller The Ark, is one of the most interesting authors we ever profiled at The LA Books Examiner. Not only a skillful writer, Boyd Morrison is also a self-publishing phenomenon. Unable to find a publisher for his novels, Boyd marketed them to readers through Amazon’s Kindle program and his own web site. His books became a word-of-mouth Internet sensation, with over 7,500 copies sold in just three months! Shortly thereafter, Boyd was signed by Touchstone Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, which released The Ark on May 11.
But that’s just the beginning. Morrison is also a former Jeopardy! Champion; he has a PhD in industrial engineering from Virginia Tech and was formerly employed at NASA, Microsoft’s Xbox Games Group, and Thomson-RCA. Morrison is also a professional actor who has appeared in commercials, stage plays, and films. He lives with his wife in Seattle.
And here’s the kicker: a story about Morrison and his wife that is a true testament of their love and respect for one another.
After three years of marriage, Morrison and his wife made an incredible pact. For the nine years it would take for his wife to complete pre-med, medical school, and her residency, Morrison agreed that he would financially support the household by himself. In return, once she became a practicing physician, she would support the household for the next nine years so that he could pursue his dream of becoming a published author.
It didn’t take nine years, however, for Boyd to become an Internet phenomenon and now a publishing sensation with the release of his debut thriller The Ark. But the agreement itself is so amazing that we wanted to share that story with you.

The Ark begins when brilliant archaeologist Dilara Kenner is contacted by Sam Watson, an old family friend who says that he has crucial information about her missing father. Dilara abandons her Peruvian dig and rushes to Los Angeles to meet him, but at the airport, Sam speaks instead of Noah’s Ark—the artifact her father had long been searching for—and the possible death of billions. Before Sam can explain, he collapses. With his dying breath, he urges Dilara to find Tyler Locke—a man she’s never heard of.
